Intimate weddings like this don’t come up all the time. This was unique and very special. Sam + Maarten showed that small weddings bring out the biggest emotions and I loved every minute of it.
A countryside mansion with a moat? and swans? holy moly.
Sometimes you rock up to a wedding venue and just think “wow, this is special,” and that’s exactly what happened at Sam and Maarten’s summer celebration at the Huygens Museum. This incredibly old building sits surrounded by a moat complete with swans, backed by gorgeous forest – it’s proper fairytale stuff. The ceremony was outside on the most perfect warm, sunny day, with everyone facing the castle. You couldn’t have asked for better weather or a more romantic setting, and the intimate family atmosphere made it feel even more magical.
The building’s historian offered the wedding party a spontaneous tour, which was such a lovely touch and really added to the sense of occasion. These kinds of unexpected moments – learning about centuries of history on your wedding day – are what make destination weddings so incredible. The emotional speeches hit differently too; something about being in such a meaningful, historic place seemed to bring out all the feelings. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house, including mine if I’m honest.
More laughing and crying than one photographer can take
We managed to squeeze in a last-minute twilight couple shoot, and I’m so glad we did. That golden evening light on the moat with the castle in the background? Absolutely stunning. Sam and Maarten kept their day small and focused on family, which meant every moment felt significant and personal. It was one of those weddings that reminds you that sometimes the most intimate celebrations in the most special places create the biggest impact.
